as-path prepending on transit?

Group,

Im considering using as-path prepending in a situation where I can't use MED.
The requirement is fairly simple but I can't lab it up today. AS 101 learns
routes to AS301 via ebgp peerings to AS201. I would like AS101 to prefer to
use one link to AS201 over the other to get to AS301 prefixes.

The issue is the examples I have seen illustrate using AS-PATH prepending on
the routers withing the AS that actually announces the prefixes your
downstream AS needs to get to. In my case I would need a solution on the
transit AS so to speak. Will this work?

If so then I figured a simple route-map and set as-path prepend 201 would
ensure the AS101 routers use the preferred link.

Thoughts?

Thanks
Gary
