I always flew in the day before to get my stuff, car and check into the
hotel. Also, I always do a test drive to see if there is any construction
along the route. So far, I've been really lucky with the planes being
somewhat on time.

It would depend on the distance from your place to lab location and
time-zone difference.

You'd want to spare 1-2 days to get over jet lag and visit cisco 1 day
before lab to see things are fine.
