Rental Racks Vs Home-lab

Hi All,

I have a question, which might be rudimentary, response will surely be
appreciated.

My Situation:

Knowledge-level : Passed written last year, due to the work-environment was
involved in other technologies (other than the ones in the R/S). Work for ISP,
so I do do hands-on...

Resources: Have a set-up of routers (low-end) 2501s, No switches. Can do basic
WAN topology as per IE lab.

Question:

I want to plan well for my preparation for the lab, with this in mind & given
the above conditions, which option is quantitatively (given the avg no of
hours, ofcourse, months & days of practise that I'll need) is more logical (as
most of you gentlemen/ women have gone thru this assessment at one point :

A) Investing more $$ ( & yes, helping out the economy....i hope my wife's not
around....) in buying the switches & fixing/ upgrading the existing WAN topo

OR

B) Investing $$ in online rack rentals (which again in a way is helping the
economy....)

How much do the following factors weigh/ matter in each case:

1) Using online to do labs related to switching & ofcourse, during the end,
when i'm ready & need to do full-fledged labs i would go online)

2) Flexibility of doing the practise labs as per my availability & on the fly

3) Being able to do small customized labs

4) For you, which option was financially more logical ?

5) What is a fair estimate to account for reasonable # of practise lab hours
that I'll need (would it be IE's 30 + some-other-vendors 20 labs = 50 lab * <x>
hours...........how much time does/ should 1 lab take (i know, this is a little
subjective, depending upon the level of difficulty & my level of expertise, but
still, if you could avg it out....say, in your case.....)

As I said your opinion would be greatly valued.

Thanks & good luck !!
