To be fair, both are decent products. They both cover base optimization
pretty well, while each also has strengths in areas that the other is
weak in.
At the end of the day, the choice between the products is going to be
based on these differentiators, not who's data redundancy elimination
algorithm was tweaked 5% faster this week.
Depending on the problem you are trying to fix any of the following
might be more important to you then the other - ease of integration,
vmware integration, client based software distribution, wccp vs inline,
embedded M$ os , ability to redirect sniffs, IDS visibility, and more.

To be frank, Riverbed had a head start. Their SE's understand the
Windows / Exchange administrators and are adept at speaking their
language and identifying their pain points.

For a while there, WAAS was playing catchup. It only supported WCCP
integration, you had to hard code its protocol descriptions, it was
frankly a pain. Cisco took the feedback from the customer base and the
channel and made and drop and insert card, as well as made much of the
protocol descriptions and far side WAAS discovery automatic. At the core
it was always stable and did its job, but now it is much easier to
configure and set up in a proof of concept environment.

For me, I choose WAAS. You might choose the same, you might not. But I
would hope that you would make that choice based on the larger
integration features rather then a one off test conducted by somebody else.
