Dane,

This is the case for all interface types. Not just p2p.

What Brian says in the CoD is, you are not achieving anything other than
making your config one more line larger by adding a statement to map your
own address.

To ping your own address in a FR circuit, the packets has to travel to the
other end of the link and comes back. If you notice the ping times, it would
be approximately double the ping time for the other end.

Please see below the example config.

interface Serial0/0
 ip address 172.16.12.1 255.255.255.0
 encapsulation frame-relay
 no dce-terminal-timing-enable
 frame-relay map ip 172.16.12.1 102
 frame-relay map ip 172.16.12.2 102 broadcast
 no frame-relay inverse-arp
 frame-relay lmi-type ansi
end

R1#ping 172.16.12.2

Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 172.16.12.2, timeout is 2 seconds:
!!!!!
Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 52/52/52 ms
R1#ping 172.16.12.1

Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 172.16.12.1, timeout is 2 seconds:
!!!!!
Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 100/101/108 ms
