Hehe. So it was just pointed out to me that you really can see the "hidden"
responses on those stupid login required sites - you just have to do some
serious scrolling. Since I don't want to promote those kind of places, I'm
not posting the link. But if you google "tftpdnld 3550" you will find the
following discussion:
Question:
"I have a 3550 switch - trying to update the flash to a newer version - I
have downloaded the flash and have it on my PC which is a tftp server. Like
a not so smart person I typed erase flash - now I am not sure how to get the
new image on the switch as I am "new and different mode" on the switch I
have never been in. Please help me correct my stupidity :)"
Answer marked as "Accepted Solution:"
"You should be in rommon mode:
Here is a good expalnation from a prior <XX> post:
<deleted because I hate them>
rommon 1> IP_ADDRESS=172.15.19.11
rommon 2> IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.0
rommon 3> DEFAULT_GATEWAY=172.16.19.1
rommon 4> TFTP_SERVER=172.15.20.10
rommon 5> TFTP_FILE=c3620-i-mz.120-4.T
Once you set the above variables, you can type the tftpdnld command and
press "y" to proceed:
rommon 6>tftpdnld
Do you wish to continue? y/n: y
Make sure you have your TFTP server running and the IOS image in the root of
the TFTP server's folder.
Reload the switch and it should come up with the new IOS."
____
So although the answer given shows an example of a 3620, the original
question seems to have related to a 3550. And the example was marked as
accepted. May be worth a try if you haven't already finished with that
x-modem business...
Cheers all,
Scott

Hey guys,
I don't have any 3550s in my lab or I'd check this before posting. Can't
you do the 'tftpdnld' process on a 3550? I googled "tftpdnld 3550" and that
came back with a few hits, but they were mostly behind those stupid login
required "experts exchange" type of sites.
Anyway, *if* it's possible, that's generally speaking the easiest way to go
IMHO...
Regards,
Scott

Be sure to set the Baud rate higher for the transfer and upload the smallest
image you can find just to get it operational.
Once operational, then you can do the normal archive download/sw /ov upgrade
to your desired version.
This two step process may be much faster in the long run.
