My impression, going off of what I've heard the various instructors say, is
that if they don't specify which way they want something, it doesn't violate
the baseline rules of the lab, and it will work either way, they don't care
which way you do it.
With a few exceptions, secrecy is deeply incompatible with democracy and with
science.
