Get the cheapest ones you can... is my first advice.
The 3550's do not do Private VLANs...
However, myself...
I'm not big on fancy new features and although for a
long time I used to spend a lot of time learning them
for the lab...
Hindsight being 20/20, I'd have spent my time better
only worrying about core features...
Truly, I worried about ISDN till it was gone, ATM,
IPX, various desktop protocols, DLSW+, etc.
Well...
To get back to the question...
The 3550's will do the trick if you gotta maintain a
budget.
As long as you think you can remember to not hard code
the speed and duplex...
You'll do fine for most things... actually tested by
the lab.
Also remember that if you hard-code the duplex on gig
ports you lose flow-control and if you ever have time
to go back and read all the discussions on this forum
about what a pause frame does, then you might not need
to see it in first person to understand the underlying
issues associated with it and why you should not set
the duplex manaully on GB ports... note I did not say
speed... since we can't set the speed on GB ports (at
least on the devices I've worked with pretty much).
Ok...
3550's will do the trick. If you absolutely must see
the 3560... then buy an 8-port from ebay new for
like... $995.00
You can get the 3550's for like $400.00 - $700.00
right now with the code you need in many cases - mind
you that legally you are responsible for IOS, no
matter what as the license is not legally transferable
between owners and it is only legally licensed to the
orginal buyer.
Did this help a bit...
Disclaimer: Looking for absurd 12.4.x T-Train features
and their proper configuration and features will help
you master cool aspects of the Job and may even help
in the CCIE Lab... to some degree.
But... do not neglect the core protocols that have
been around since dirt while studying for them...
Of course... if you got time... Zone-Based Firewalls,
and the new ASE are pretty cool features that are nice
to know about... But you might not learn them if you
are not actively using the Univercd on CCO...
Good Luck...
Gotta get my remote racks fully operational and get
all my auxillary access in place in case I need for my
next outing...
