Dear Packet Reader,

Cisco is evolving its customer communications to a more interactive,
Web-based model. As a result, the September issue (Third Quarter 2006) of
Packet magazine will be the final edition of the publication, as we
transform our corporate Website, Cisco.com, into our primary communications
forum for networking professionals.

To say that a great deal has happened in the world of high tech since Packet
was first introduced in 1988 would be something of an understatement. We've
seen the birth and explosive growth of the World Wide Web, the pervasive use
of cellular and mobile communications, the convergence of voice, video and
data, and all the commensurate innovation in networking technologies. Cisco
has often led the way, evolving with the times and embracing the latest
advances in areas such as optical, network security, content networking,
wireless, voice over IP, storage-area networks, video and IPTV, to name just
a few.

As Cisco has changed, so too has its customer base. Once consisting of
predominantly enterprise network personnel, today's Cisco customers are as
diverse as their information needs: service providers and small to midsized
businesses, broader IT teams such as voice, security, and applications
personnel, IT directors and CIOs, and the business decision makers of
countless vertical markets around the globe.

As such, the company's Website, Cisco.com, has grown and continues to evolve
to meet these diverse information needs. The networking technology
enthusiasts that make up the Packet readership have a wealth of avenues on
Cisco.com in which to delve for useful information to help them in their
careers. May I suggest the following Web resources:

Networking Professionals Connection
Cisco IT@Work
Blogs@Cisco
Networkers Online
The Internet Protocol Journal
Cisco Technical Services Newsletter
Technical Support and Documentation
Learning and Events
Google Groups: comp.dcom.sys.cisco
Cisco Learning Connection
Cisco Certifications Community

These are exciting times at Cisco and elsewhere, and we look forward to your
continued support and input as the future unfolds for all of us. It's been a
great ride!

Best wishes,

David Ball

Editor in Chief

Yup, I was in it too years ago still get the IPJ delivered. As for Packet,
don't they still publish the online version? Admittedly I don't have much
time these days for trade rags butlast I heard Packet was out there.

I was too! Majorly. It heralded the beginning of their major cost-cutting
campaign that we each have suffered under.

But as someone who was years ago published in the IP Journal (just a book
review), I guess I have to beg to differ on the "boring" part... ;~)
