Your statement implies that he 7000 will replace the 6500 in the short
to medium term. From what I have seen the 7000 is being positioned to
augment 6500 for example, in the core, with 6500's in an aggregation
layer, providing service consolidation, load balancing services,
firewalling, etc. (putting a service module in a 7000 is just a waste of
bandwidth.. the service modules could never take full advantage of all
that backplane speed).
You will also see that the 6500 with 1440 is positioned to support VSL
for your server farms, which is not something the 7000 is positioned
for. Same thing with MPLS Carrie Supporting Carrie implementations deep
into your datacenter, you will either have to have a sup7203b or higher
to support mpls (though Nexus 7000 support vrf for extension).
While the Nexus 7000 is a great device and will be the building block of
enterprise datacenters for the next 15 years, it has its place in the
datacenter, I see it as augmenting and enhancing Cisco's portfolio, not
replacing or limiting the investment value in the 6500 line or
datacenter switches.
