It's been a while I am looking for information to put in place a cisco
solution in Data Centre.
The design is using cisco standard approach .(core, dist, server aggr).. with
only difference that the links are combination of fiber and cooper, and
running STP.
Cooper for 1GBaseT and 10GBaseT , while fibers (OM3) are designed for 1G,
10G and the coming 100G.
Why 10GBaseT? copper is cheaper than fiber. AND it will be no time that all
high end servers will be shipped with 10GBaseT on-board.
So 10GBaseT are for server aggregation and backup link ( backbone or
distribution )
Why OM3? It will support at least 100m for 100G Ethernet in the future. ( it
supports 1 G and 10G currently)
I have been inquiring this from cisco since last year ( contacting my
friends both in cisco APAC and EMEA ). The impression I got was ...
" Yes Cisco will support 10G designed for Data Centre" ... " AND It will be
released next year (2008) "
Nexus 7000 ?
This is IT !!! ... the waiting is over ...
But It support 10G using sfp+ :(
Where is my 10G X2 ?
But connection to server aggregation is using 1GBaseT :(
Where is my 10GBaseT server aggregation ?
I think Cisco is confused by giving mixed approach to Data Centre design and
10GBaseT deployment :)
2 Cisco's mistakes :
1. Use dual 1G and upgrade to 10G when available ? .. sound familiar ? :-p
.... Yepp ... 3750-E campaign he he he
the thing is that 3750-E 10G is using X2 interface, and when you use it ...
it provides only one uplink without backup uplink.
And this NEXUS is supporting in on sfp+ :)
You must be responsible and accountable with your own campaign ;)
maybe cisco thinks that using sfp+ will support more ports per module, why
should be bothered with big and ugly X2 :)
Do you think cisco will shipped 10GBaseT module for 3750-E in the future ?[
just like what happened for 1GBaseT using GBIC?] ....
Do you think cisco will shipped 10G sfp+ module for 3750-E in the future ?[
just like what happened with GBIC?] ....
maybe .... i don't know.
2. Forget to develop 10GBaseT for server aggregation ? :)
Do you think cisco will shipped 10GBaseT card in the future ? .... maybe (
for this NEXUS) ... i don't know.
Or maybe cisco will replace 4948 (48 1GBaseT) to 4948-E ( with all 10GBaseT
) .... I'll be looking forward this to happen
Well, Nexus misses some of my requirements :-p
Maybe cisco should consult me before designing product for the next data
centre :-p
Should I use SMC tiger instead ? ha ha ha ... kidding [ but they do ship
10GBaseT switch :-)]
Any comments ?
cheers,
