I run dynamips on a quad proc vista machine at about 15 - 25 percent. I can
run 13 - 15 routers in two processes.
I've added the following enhancements to the application to help it work
better.
in my initial configs i set all the console ports on all routers to logging
synchronous. . If you like to use CTRL r to repaint your command line your
dynamips will not run very well. This is because the idle pc value is found
by looking for the # symbol, If you still like to ue the CTRL r you can
modify one or two routers configs. This shouldn't hurt.
I turn off logging buffered in all of my routers. I don't see the need to
use more diskspace or processor power to write logg messages unless i need
them for a task later on.
I set my unused ports to shutdown. For example, nothing is connected to
switch1's fastethernet0/0, so it is shut.
I set all my backbone routers so i cannot use the 'wr' command.
I use a list of ios images for each process. One is in use and the others
are commented out.
I use a list of idlepc values. One is used and the others are commented out.
I do this just in case i need a feature like cbac for a task. Otherwise i
use the leaner ios like ip+.
I turn off unnecessary services in my initial configuration. Since i don't
need them, there is no reason to mak my proc atttend them.
I turn on ip tcp keepalives in and out. This dynamically monitors the
network for orphaned tcp sesssions and reduces the need for cpu cycles.
I set the speed and duplex for the 10 meg interfaces in the initial
confiurations. This stops the generation of needless logging messsages and
unnecessary cpu cycles.
When i first open a new dynamiips session I start /all then telnet to all
routers and switches to get the # prompt up as soon as possible because the
idlepc value is looking for this #.
I also read all the blog entries in the forum

cant think of anything else.
