John, you didn't reveal a lot of details about the scenario...so here's
a few comments based on my own experiences.
If your carrier hands you SONET to plug directly into your router's
Packet Over SONET (POS) interface, you are capable of receiving SONET
alarms and log messages, which can be helpful in diagnosing issues.
Your QoS policy (should you need one) might be more straightforward to
implement (depending on what kind of a circuit you bought) since you
won't have to artificially create congestion with a shaper.
If the carrier hands you ethernet that they turn into SONET somewhere
down the line, you may not have insight into circuit up/down events - or
you might - all depending on what the carrier sold you. You might have
to write a slightly more complex QoS policy with a shaper, since a Gig-E
handoff from the carrier could be used to overwhelm whatever downstream
SONET bandwidth you're paying for. But then again, all of us are
familiar with ethernet, and we likely have ethernet available in any
sort of router we might want to terminate the circuit on.
If you're in a pre-sales cycle with a carrier, make sure you ask a lot
of questions. And make sure the guy you're talking to actually
understands what he's trying to sell you. If you aren't getting the
kind of technical detail you need to make the decision, ask for a
conference call with a senior engineer that has the information you
need.
HTH.
