loopback command under SVI on a 3550 - what for?

Hey guys,

can someone point me to a link of what exactly happens when you make apply the loopback command on a SVI on a 3550/3560, in other words:

!
interface vlan 1
ip address 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
loopback
!

am just thinking of what benefits there are.. seems like the SVI still goes down if the vlan looses all ports ...
OSPF doesn't treat it any different neither (s ip ospf int vl 1 still gives the same output)

[obviously running ospf and having the interface enabled]

any thoughts appreceated. just came accross the command and can't really make any use out of it...
