CEF adjacency table interpretation

Around year 2003, CCNP's switching exam really stressed out CEF theory.

All in the sudden, the exams seem to abandon the theory. Now all I remember
is that fast switching is bad, CEF is good and the only choice in switches.
Is this just typical shift of focus, on to VoIP, telephony, etc?
