Bootcamps and advanced training in any area aka
continuing lifelong education is essential in our
chosen field.
Whether you do it by buying a book, attending a class,
attending a conference, or listening to audio books on
topics like self-improvement, you cannot go wrong by
investing in yourself.
I am a product of my preaching and I've watched my
career directly benefit from my efforts.
I do spend more time writing, reading, coaching others
in their own pursuits and careers, but every once in a
while I actually find time for myself.
And helping people has helped keep me motivated.
I could have "stopped reaching" at several points in
my career and been doing fine.
However, I've preferred to keep learning.
Training is essential to my efforts - concentrated
time and energy to dedicate to one topic or body of
knowledge for at least 1 week (8-10 days for me - I
use the weekends too).
Price is always an issue of course. We all have
limited resources whatever they are.
But if you think education (bootcamps) are expensive
try not using them and how long it may take.
Taking 2-3 years to get a CCIE is not a bad investment
of time and energy.
I've heard of people stopping, dropping their jobs and
lives, just to pursue and in some cases complete the
CCIE. However, I've not always heard that everyone
received a $125-200k job immediately either.
Most still had to earn their own place in the
workforce.
The training and certs help level things out with more
experienced people but we all still have to take time
to savor the "experience" and make our own mistakes.
One thing everyone should understand about any
bootcamp for the CCIE - most are eye-openers and
require additional study.
Only about 2-3 that I can think of are "finishing
schools" but with most of these they assume you have
already done the work - and truly if you have then
perhaps all can be called "finishing schools" and
excellent review for the lab.
All are different and all seem to me that I've done
have added value and help me do my job with different
vantage points (which I love).
So...
If you can get to one, I'd highly recommend it.
If you cannot, then I suggest you invest in your
library (online is fine) and take the the time to read
and use them by doing the exercises.
Either way - you get what you pay for and your time is
likely the most precious element involved in either
case.
