vlan.dat is exactly that.. a vlan database removed from the standard
configuration, that contains vlan data irregardless of VTP mode/state
I have had switches in trans mode (3750x2 attached via Switch Stack)
that would fail on a Master switchover because the vlan.dat wasn't
replicated (long story).
When i opened a TAC call and after about a day, it was explained to
me that all vlan configuration information on the 3500/3600/3700
switches was contained in the vlan.dat. On boot the startup-config
has reference points that query it.
VTP manipulates this file based on mode. So if a vtp mode is server..
the vlan.dat is modified by vtp (by configuration). If the vtp mode
is in cleint.. the vlan.dat is modified by vtp (through protocol)..
if the vtp mode is in transp.. the vlan.dat is modified by configuration
The question is: Why does the data need to be stored in a seperate
vlan file?
Regards,
Nate
