I do the same and find the same result. When I was studying for the
written, often reading until well past midnight, I would go out for my
"evening stroll" afterwards regardless of the time or the weather (anything
but lightening). One or two nights prior to sitting the exam, I came
literally within about arm's reach of a pretty large black bear that I
happened to know was the mother of two cubs. LOL, I retained nearly
everything from that day quite well (at least through passing the exam).
She pretended to ignore me until I put some distance in between the two of
us. Just as I got to my own fence line, she charged down the hill. Now
THAT will ever be one of my CCIE study memories...

Personally I like to drink green tea while studying and try to get out
walking right after spending a few hours on the rack. The walk right
after seems to help me retain everything a little better.
