Hey Steve,
Having one of the worst memories in the networking industry, I just focus on
the table of contents (so to speak). A well-known 4x CCIE once told me (and
I'm paraphrasing at best here!) to focus on knowing that something exists in
the DocCD and more or less where to find it. Even if you just pare your
read list down to the "relevant" sections, can you reasonably expect to
retain it all (or even half of it)?
When I did IEWB Vol I, I found each technology focused on by each and every
lab and read everything the DocCD had to say on the subject; I did not just
work through the labs by rote. I have retained probably less than 10% of it
all, but I do have a better idea of what's relevant (the labs themselves
clue me in on that by what *they* focus on) and roughly where to find stuff.
With time, I get better and worse at navigating the DocCD, depending on how
much of it I've been doing lately. For example, I just finished up a
two-week CoD (that took me nearly three weeks) and am now working on Vol II.
Even after only a few weeks "away," I'm finding myself a bit rusty. But you
get the idea: let the lab products, classes you take, the blueprint, and
maybe even recurring discussions you see here clue you in as to what's most
important and then try to know the locations of at least that much very,
very well come lab day. Also, in your spare time, poke around and see what
you see. The IEWB CoD had some good suggestions for off-the-wall DocCD
reading.
Now all of this is from someone who has yet to sit the lab, so take it with
a grain of salt. But it's the approach I've settled in on, for whatever
that's worth...
Regards,
Scott

I hear a lot about knowing the DocCD inside and out. There seems to be a
ton of information on Cisco.com/univercd that is not on the lab blueprint.
So my question is from the main page what places do I need to focus on?
Just 12.2/12.4 IOS code, 3550/3560 switch pages, and 3725/3825 routers?
Anything else?
Thanks
Steve
