Sure I have in lab environments. In any production network I was building,
I would normally put a Fiber Distribution Panel in and then patch the two
together that way, but there's nothing to stop you from forgoing the FDP if
you have the appropriate cable with the appropriate connectors on each end
and can cross them over.
Now I guess my assumption here was that you would not be trying to put LX or
ZX optics back-to-back! At the very least you'll drive your receiver into
saturation. At worst, you could smoke something. Presumably we're talking
like 100BaseFX or something. In that case, if you look at how the RX and TX
specs are set up, you can connect them back-to-back without needing to
consider attenuation.
If my assumption is incorrect and you plan to try to do this with long-haul
optics, you need to look into attenuation. If that's the case, no doubt I
can dig around and send you a link. I did have to temporarily move a server
and some networking gear from ~2.5 km away from a group of associated IP
cameras to a location almost immediately adjacent. Thus, I had to buy a
BUNCH of attenuators because when I built the network originally, I used LX
optics due to the distance involved. Those attenuators were surprisingly
expensive. In the old days of ST connectors, attenuators were just little
doughnut thingies that increased the gap internal to the connection and thus
created loss. With these new fancy LC connectors and whatnot, you actually
need an in-line optical pad. Seems to me they were around $100 each.
