Have you heard of paper candidates?
Have you heard of lab rats?

Let me explain. Paper candidate is a person that loves theory and algorithms. How protocols work. They spend alot of time in libraries reading about cisco stuff and networking. They know how BGP works in and out. They know the OSI and how everything works. But there is a one catch. They dont have any experiense how to configure it on routers. They hate using a screwdriver and doing rack work.

Lab rat is a person that loves hands on experience. They like putting routers in racks and using screwdrivers. They know how to put in commands in IOS to configure even the most complex schenarios. But they dont know why. They have just learned how to do it by experience. They can put up a bgp network and if you ask them how they did it they will give you the commands but no explanations. They just know it.

Cisco is trying to combine the two abowe in the CCIE by having a written test and a lab. But I dont think it will work that way.

Jon
