Absolutely William. I gave the assessor lab myself 2 days back and after
missing 1 Sub-question on BGP and one on Multicast on the second lab, my
final score was 80. On the first lab, I was not even able to complete all
the questions for shortage of time. An interesting point to note is that the
assessor labs are graded on 50 points and there are fewer questions. So
missing one question here would translate to missing 2 questions on a lab of
100 points.

Subject: Interesting, Re: CCIE scoring
I just did the assesor labs, and have done plenty of other labs in the past
(including the real deal), but, one thing that always got me was how
challenging it can be to get 80%. Given, I have done much school, college,
and other certs... it never seems so hard to get 80%
I figured it out. The premise that 80% is passing doesn't take into account
that you must get all tasks per section to get the points. So if you
figure... 3 points per "question", each question has 4 "tasks", and you only
need to drop 1 task to drop all points for section... You can find that in
reality, you need to score much greater than 90% to pass the lab. (assuming
you are like me (and most), and you can solve the questions but occasionally
will miss a task).
Anyway, I think it is academically interesting. My personal opinion is that
80% should be easy to get, but how it is structured can make all the
difference, since we're not just passing 80% of the required tasks... we're
having to pass closer to 95% of the required tasks.
