Hi,

You may wish to spend some time on the Hacki forum
(http://7200emu.hacki.at/index.php). It seems the latest release of
Dynamips has had a few issues when being operated from a Windows platform.
If you are serious about this as your approach for CCIE lab prep, I STRONGLY
recommend that you consider either Linux or OS X. You will never get the
kind of performance out of a Windows box that you will from the other two.
If you run from a really large Windows platform with multiple CPUs and lots
of RAM, you will be OK. Otherwise, your performance will suffer.

If you elect to stay with Windows, go to the "General" forum at the above
link and look at the sticky on idlepc values. It's somewhat of a "black
art" that requires a fair bit of time getting used to. In fact, it's
probably the one main thing about Dynamips that trips up and slows down
those new to the whole thing. Some discussion has been ongoing as to the
possibility of an online database which your client can automatically
search. Or possibly finding a way to automatically adjust idlepc locally.
State of the art is not quite there yet, though.

Finally, you forgot to mention your router platforms. Idlepc values are
agnostic to OS but are unique per platform, per release.

Regards,

Scott

Subject: Dyangen for R&S

Hi GS,

I have recently started using dynagen for preparation of R&S lab. I am
facing lot of issues running it on my P4-2.8Ghz Server with 2 GB RAM,
WinXP-SP2. I am using the sample Internetwork Expert Topologies for Dynagen
v4.01 with the exact IOS mentioned in the .net file. Tried using a lot of
idlepc values but my CPU usage doesn't go down. Sometimes 1 or 2 routers get
stuck/very slow and i have no other option than to Stop n Start those
routers.

Can anyone suggest an IOS and its tried n trusted idlepc value that works
even when all the routers in the topology are running.

Thanks & Regards
