RE: alias in lab configuration

Funny you should mention keyboards Rik! I have one of these funky split
doohickies with all of the curvature and whatnot. I was just thinking the
other day that I probably need to replace it with an older "normal" keyboard
so as to not have a rough time of typing come lab day.

Oddly enough, my typing skill have actually degraded slightly (age I
suppose) but are still more than sufficient to not be worrying about
aliases. I suppose I'll learn those scripts everyone is always talking
about, though...

I used an alias list during my last lab attempt and I don't believe they
helped me much. My typing skills have improved anyway so I won't bother
with them again.

If you can type pretty well then it shouldn't be a problem. I think there's
much bigger things to worry about in the lab. ;-)

Rik

PS - While it's minor, I never did like the keyboards at RTP. I think they
were IBM and they had a very long keystroke, which just screwed me up all
day long.

Hey Rik,

Never created an alias in my life, I know nothing about them, so I guess I
kinda did fall for it in a way...

LOL

Does that mean you didn't fall for it? ;-)

LOL, because then when I was anywhere but the main exec prompt I'd be
hosed!! That "do" thing gets into your blood and stays there...

How about aliasing "do" to a space?

Man, I so do that all the damned time. Why can't IOS simply accept "do"
from any context?

On the topic of aliases, does anyone know how to alias the config-mode
command "do" to essentially nothing in exec-mode? I have a terrible habit
of typing "do" before any command. Maybe it is just a bad habit to do
everything in config-mode, but it is easier than exiting config mode all the
time. :)

Just make sure you remove the correct lines of config! Or what happens if
you remove the lines of config and then forget to save the new config? I
don't know, I just think the added variables of putting in aliases isn't
worth it in the big picture of the 8 hour lab exam. Too many other issues it
can cause. But maybe that's just because I type 150 WPM and it doesn't
affect me as much as other folks.

Importance: Low

It's not that it's over-config, but there's potential it will interfere with
the scripts that grade your exam. I don't know about you, but I have no
problem removing them as opposed to randomly losing points due to some
script failure on my configs!!!

Wow!

That is interesting, I would have thought they would be "over-config"
that would not be penalized.

Hearing that would scare me out of using them I think...although to be
honest, I never really considered it for the lab exam anyway.

They are allowed, but Bobby and Howard in RTP ask that you remove them at
the end of the day.
