RFC's are another string your bow. While some are exhausting to read and
complex it doesn't hurt to pour over a few.
I still do when I have the time :)

You do not need to read the rfc's but if you have a question regarding a
cretin technology it is best to go to the source (like you check routing you
do a recursive search to the source) it would not heart to get a glance and
see if the thing you where looking for is in there or not.
as for the topic of this question the rfc 1918 is not very long and mostly
informative but if you search for something specific like 127.0.0.1 or 127.0.0
you will not find it there and even if you do not want to read the rfc it
tells you that it is not included in that rfc.
so simple search some time you will find in the rfc more help then you would
expect when it come to understanding a technology.
