It's not the amount of time but rather the quality of it. It also matters
where you are starting from. Personally, if you are reasonably experienced
in the field then I don't think it's out of the question to spend at least
1000 hours of study/lab time in the next year, which averages out to around
20 hours per week.
Follow the advice of a very recent thread and read, read and read some more.
Get to know the protocols and technologies inside and out before you ever
touch a lab.
