RE: Multicast - Backup

Hello Dan,

Why can't Backup Rp be done with auto-rp? Without modifying the IP
Address of both RPs, I don't think BSR is the only way to go, also I
would be surprised if asked to configure BSR in a Cisco environment,
from the way things are going, Cisco is pushing the Auto-rp
implementation into the market more and more.

Remember when a PIM device receive 2 entries of RP information for same
group, it sticks (prefers) with the one from auto-rp over static-rp
information.

So in case you have R1 and R2 with loopback Ips of 1.1.1.1 and 2.2.2.2
respectively, if I want to make R1 the RP, I could do with a combination
of static and auto-rp without reconfiguring R1's IP

I would simply advertise R1 as RP for group X via auto-rp and advertise
R2 as RP for same group X via static-rp .... That way, pim routers will
always prefer R1 over R2 even though R1 has a lower IP address.... So if
the R1 is unreachable, they then switch to R2

Many Thanks

Yemi Salau

Hi Carlos,

Can not be done using auto-rp, you will need to use BSR.

Cheers,
Dan
