I wonder why this keeps popping up. FrameRelay and MPLS are two totally
different things, not mutually exclusive or replaceable.
While I agree that getting rid of FrameRelay may make some sense for us
living outside of USA (on the small lava rock that I live on, we stopped
using it en masse sometime around 2001 or so), MPLS is not really
plug-in replacement from a technology point of view. While MPLS VPN's
may be deployed as a corporate replacement for FrameRelay solutions,
knowing how exactly MPLS works under the hood is not something that is
enterprise subject - for that matter, not really R&S subject.
However, what seems to be rapidly replacing FrameRelay as an access
method are various DSL technologies - ADSL (with its 2+/Annex M
toppings), G.SHDSL, EFM and fun stuff like that. If R&S lab wants to
move into the new century, these should be included sometime soon.
