You will get your 8 hours, no more no less. After the first 4 hours,
there is a 30 minutes lunch break. You are not allowed to touch the
lab during the briefing and lunch. However, you can take as many
breaks as you want on your time (i.e. do nothing, ask proctor anything
you want, go to the rest room or get a soft drink). In the Brussels
lab, you get sift drinks, some fruits and lunch for free, and you are
allowed to bring a soft drink into the lab - at least that was allowed
when I was there.
The point is that you are the only person responsible for your time
management. You do not get warnings. The reference time is the
workstation time, but better have your own watch on the table.
My advise, regardless your plan for the first hour is to never waste
more that 10 minutes on a task (your brain will find a solution in the
background). As you go through the lab, write down the task number
and point value. Check if you properly solved it. If unsolved or not
sure, mark your confidence degree in solving it or not. If you know
that you cannot solve a task completely, do not "try" it. Of course,
that means that you cannot afford to be stuck into the earlier
sections, because many other tasks depend on them. So know the basics
damn well or at least know a way of making them work, even if you
violate an isolated requirement, if you are losing other points
because of that! Now, back to time management: only after the first
iteration you will know how much time is left. Depending on that,
first review your work - i.e. check routing, ping stuff and review
tasks against misinterpretation. Then, do the unsolved points where
your confidence is higher (suppose that they are not that many left).
Last but not least, do not do any drastic change during the last half
hour. If you do not have much time left, well, it is gut feeling.
Personally, I would try to fix the unsolved tasks.
Be cool and relax. Relax whenever you feel nervous. You will be
amazed that those 11 people that met before the lab usually don't even
talk to each other - and hardly during the lunch break. Don't be that
way!
