OK gents, I just want to make sure I understand this fully. I am
ordering four new 3560-8PC switches for my R&S lab prep. I do not plan
to put these switches into a production environment. It's always been my
understanding that Cisco allows anyone with a CCO login to download any
feature set for any switch or router for the purposes of evaluation,
etc. Only once a feature set goes into production is a license purchase
required, according to my understanding. Thus, I have already downloaded
an Enterprise image for my switches and plan to flash that on the minute
they arrive. Has Cisco somehow prevented me from enabling the enterprise
features without a per-platform license key? Or is that something that's
under consideration? Given that the Enterprise CD is ~$1k, I would not
be able to proceed with my plan of attack were that to be necessary x 4.
I think at that point I would shift over to the Dynamips ethernet switch
module version of the IEWBs and then do a few rack rentals prior to
sitting the lab...

Actually licensing is based on the feature set. This is supported
today on
the 3560-E and 3750-E. Their is only a single image for each
platform, but
the license key allows you to use the features you've licensed. So
instead
of downloading multiple images and loading the appropriate one, you
only
need one. So now IP Base, IP Services, and IP Advanced Services. It
will be
coming to additional platforms in the future, but most likely not
retroactively to deployed platforms.
So if you have a sw license for the platform, you can upgrade
versions all
you want. But, if you don't have the appropriate license then you
can't run
additional features. Of course the license belongs to the original
purchaser.
