RE: Virtual CCIE's?

I don't believe there are virtual CCIEs. You either pass the test or
don't. It doesn't matter how you learned the material.

My opinion as a former hiring manager (I led a team of 7 senior network
engineers in my Fortune 500 company) and still as an IT Architect
involved in hiring people is that:

1) A CCIE certification can help get you an interview. But I would
also look at CCNPs with good, relevant experience. No certification
alone gets you the job. Any technical college degree coupled with the
above will guarantee you a phone call from me at least.
2) CCIE/NP does not mean you automatically get the position because you
must show you retained relevant parts of your knowledge, have some clue
as to how that knowledge relates to the real world and also some idea of
standard network architectures and design methodology.
3) The network is core to many businesses and you must realize that it
is so. An interest in how applications work on -- and associates
expect to use the network is very important to the success of the
candidate in a senior position.
4) Show that you are able to operate in a leadership role within the
team since engineers at this level will represent me and my organization
for projects and at meetings and conferences with little or no input
from me. You must also be able to be a contributing team member. If
you are working in a senior position, then you need to let me know what
is needed in your area of responsibility, not always the other way
around.
5) I also like to see continued effort to expand your expertise.
6) Some ability to effectively communicate both written and verbal.

I think that if you understand how the virtual products differ from a
real live router you are not taking advantage of an almost free
capability which can reduce the cost of your CCIE or even your
production and testing lab. I have not only used Dynamips in a pinch
for CCIE studies, but also to demonstrate and understand how new
features work without the time and effort needed to cable yet another
lab scenario.
