MST with VTP

I am curious if there are any caveats here. Hypothetically, I am asked to
use MST, and do some stuff on SWA, etc... They want me to use VTP with SWA
as the server, and the other switches as clients. Is there any need to put
MST on all of the switches? Maybe there would be no need, as PVST is
backwards compatible. I labbed this up, with SWA being the only switch with
MST, and did some port priorities on the instances over trunks (tweaked the
vlan paths), and even though MST was not enabled on the 3 vtp clients, they
still inherited the correct port-priority paths configured on the MST
switch. I feel like there should be a way to push out the MST configuration
through VTP. Would it be in my best interest to just go ahead and slap the
same MST config on all switches in a lab scenario?
