How about my theory:
A disgruntled CCIE candidate in San Jose didn't like the lab he got and
spent the rest of the day hacking the Cisco LAN from on site. Decided
to give the proctors something to troubleshoot instead of the other way
around, and introduced a few spanning tree loops and routing black
holes.
