Apart from RP, C-RP, MA and C-BSR which have quite a clear role, I am trying
to summarize the role of some other multicast routers.
- DR: elected by PIM in multiaccess network using 'ip pim dr-priority';
highest priority, highest ip wins.
in PIM-SM it is responsible for sending register and join/prune towards the
RP; in PIM-DM no function; in IGMP v1 the DR is also the querier.
- Designated-forwarder: on multiaccess networks is the assert winner; as the
assert process is based on admin-distance, metric and IP address the
designated forwarder can be a different router than the DR. It applies to both
PIM-SM and PIM-DM and is responsible for forwarding multicast packets on a
multiaccess network
- Querier: elected by IGMP v2 as the lowest IP, this can again be a different
router than DR and designated-forwarder. It is responsible to issue group
membership query on a multiaccess network
Any comment, suggestion .....
