I think at minimum you would want to spec a lab if possible to match any
of the current R&S rental racks as much as your budget may permit. It is
possible to emulate the router side of things using Dynamips, but you
would still need to provision the 4 switches if you want a full rack.
Also, as I understand it some of the switching technology can be
practiced as well using the multiport modules that are forced to layer 2
only. If budget doesn't permit, then consider rack rental possibly with
a basic Dynamips build for at least practice with the core technologies.
As to equipment changes, etc, this year was the first year the R&S went
to the potential 4 switch topology. The CCIE tracks are always moving
targets as technology is refreshed year to year. However, the underlying
fundamentals really don't change as 12.4 mainline is the current IOS.
I made the fundamental mistake in my studies on working on the "stupid
router tricks" instead of concentrating on the core technologies first.
This backwards approach stunted my understanding of how to build a body
of understanding for the lab.
Get a good study group together if you can as this really makes a
difference. I've found that this can be a mixed bag as often it's
difficult to keep everyone focused, but it still gives a baseline of
people to bounce things off of. Also, make use of GS, there are many
very smart people who monitor this list and will help if they can.

Subject: CCIE Lab topology
I have been on and off in my CCIE Lab preparation but now as my written
is
expiring pretty soon, I have booked my lab for Jan 8 in San
Jose(earliest I
got). I have gone through Cisco's website and found that now Cisco is
testing on 3560 aswell. Are there any chances that cisco will again
change
devices or add more technologies by the time I'll sit for the Lab?
Is there any suggestion that I should also concenterate on any added
technologies (like WiFi) in anticipation for my Lab. Although I have
been
using almost everything (currently being tested) in my past and present
job
except IPv6 but still I am busy on sharpening my skills in Qos,multicast
and
ipv6.
I am currently based out of Austin and If anybody wants to form a group
in
Austin or near by areas. I would love to do that.
Thanks Again,
Raman
