I am following univercd , making the VT100 escape string ^[[H^[[J .

I have to use Ctrl-V then Ctrl-Shift-[ to generate each ^[

Univercd seems to say Ctrl-V then Ctrl-[ will generate ^[ and that
indeed works fine with my xterm in Linux. But not Secure CRT in
Linux (through wine).

So, Ctrl-V is mandatory for escaping IOS, then it's up to your
xterm or secure CRT whatever program to generate the actual
^[ charactor.

Different software uses different keys to generate ^[ .
