Peter,
to check browser connectivity you can just telnet to some IP port 80,
wait for the session to open and then type into opened session:
GET / HTTP/1.1 [enter]
Host: www.whatever.com[enter]
[enter]
This will send the GET to the server and the second ENTER will
indicate that it is the end of GET request. The server will respond
with tons of HTML code - and you would able to see it in telnet. For
another examples see http://web-sniffer.net.
