Hi Tony,
I've read the others' comments (Josh, Paul, Jeff), I'll give another take.
I've bit the bullet and live in Alexandria (right across the Potomac from
DC). It's ridiculously expensive in I have a small 1950's home, little
front yard and even less of a back yard. The cost isn't out of our budget
but I know we're sacrificing other things. Day care for our 16-month old
alone is costing us over $10k. With another baby on the way, that'll be 20K
for day care. Almost cheaper for my wife to stay home.
You mentioned schools - Alexandria (ACPS), Fairfax, Arlington... My wife is
a teacher (and I've met a lot of other teachers in other school districts
inside the beltway) and nothing against any of the school systems, but we're
seriously considering private school. A couple of my co-workers send their
kids to private school and guess how much they pay - 10K. I keep shaking my
head when I think I'm paying the same amount for daycare as my co-workers
are paying for their kids to go to private school. Perhaps I should just
drop my little one off at private school now and let him just sit in
Kindergarten for a couple of years! ;-)
But, on the flip side, I'm only 10 minutes from work. Like the others have
mentioned, I too have co-workers that travel from WVA, Richmond, and across
the Bay Bridge each morning. Sometimes they sit in traffic for 2+ hours
one-way. Soooo..., choose your poison. I chose the small house and
probably won't be doing the yearly trip around the world or have that new
Audi R8 :-) But I'm home to try and catch-up to my little one w/in 10
minutes. That's what matters to me.
HTH,
Sean C #17085

Subject: OT: CCIE hourly rates on 1099 contracts?
Thank you all for your quick and detailed response. It really helped me
understand the process involved and also provided me some confidence that
there is a high demand for CCIEs in DC area. I will definitely consider
looking for a job there as well now, thanks to you all.
If I may, I would like to get some suggestions from the folks there as far
as a nice place to buy some real estate in where schools are good as well (I
know that DC and its suburbs are not known to be cheap but just wanted to
see what would be an ideal place to be in, IF one can afford it:-))
Thanks again.
