Are you looking for a Secret, TS, or something bigger?
Step 1: be a US Citizen or cleared person(s). (US citizen makes it easier)
Step 2: no Criminal Record (Felonies tend to get you the big DENIED).
Step 3. Make sure your Financial background is clear and you are not in debt
up to your butt. (don't want you getting blackmailed over finances)
Step 4: Find a company that will hire you and sponsor your clearance. (You
cannot just walk in to DISA (Defense Investigation Systems Agency) and ask
for a clearance.)
On average a Secret cost a company about 5000 - 7000 dollars, TS
10000+....anything higher (like polygraph, well you get the point). If you
do get a job with a clearance and say a few years you wish to change jobs,
make sure you get one that will pick up your clearance. If you clearance
runs out (2 years from time of deactivation) you will require a FULL
INVESTIGATION again. Most companies do NOT like to pay for this, but CCIE's
are in big demand in the DC area, so you shouldn't hopefully you don't have
too much of a problem.
A Big "bennie" is if you have Military background, you then have at least a
Secret clearance and that will open doors since upgrade from Secret to TS
(this was my case) is a lot easier than getting a TS from scratch.
I am sure there are others out there who can give you more info, but the
Govt. is not handing them out like candy anymore since 9/11.
Hope this helps...

Paul,
Just wondering if you or someone from DC area can advise as to how/when can
one get security clearance. I am thinking about moving to DC but not sure
how to go about this clearance thing, is it something that the potential
employer takes care of or is the candidate expected to have this before
applying for a position? Please let me know what is invovled with this
clearance as well, if possible. Thanks and looking for replies impatiently.
TIA,
Tony
