What I found was that in my first attempt I went in feeling loose and wanting to get a feel for the test (hoping to pass, but looking more to get experience on the LAB). I found the test less difficult, but that may have been just from the mind set I went in with. The second time I felt like someone had lined me up for execution. I opened up the test and wanted to start crying, but I also went in this time a bit more tense and "wanting to pass".
I believe it is in the mindset and how ready you "truly" are. If you have studied and feel confident with the tasks at hand, then you have as good a shot as anyone else. But if you go in their really not prepared (lying to yourself) you are going to feel like you just ran a gauntlet. I have not attempted since last year (August) and I do not plan to go and pay $1250 for lunch again until I feel ready. I plan to make the 3rd time my last time!

If true that the 2nd attempt is harder, I must have been given the 2nd test
6 times in a row, then!?! ;-)
I'm not sure if the proctors have some database that records who took what
test when. And then the question comes up if the database is shared between
all testing sites. I'm leaning against this, but would be curious to know
what others have to write (even Darby). There have been plenty of reports
of people seeing the same lab (or similar lab) twice.
But, like Scott wrote - those who fail can find the test hard. My easiest
test was my last one.
