minimum-reserve in queues in 3550 is to control packet delay

I can't think of any benefit other than dropping
packets that are delayed too much with respect to
the protocol that is sending the packets.

E.g. voice packets queued at the 100th place in
a slow link is most likely useless when it is
eventually
sent out to the destination phone.

All these queues store the pointer to the packet's
bytes and bits right ?

I heard someone said dropping packets is so that the
bytes and bits don't get cut in the middle when
aligning them to the output queue (software queue).
That couldn't be right. Am I right ?
