Null0 is an interface used to send bits to the bit bucket. Basically, it's
a way to "poison" a route. My latest use of it involved a VPN with a remote
site that pulled a dynamic address. We don't allow direct (or split tunnel)
Internet access from remotes so one easy way to remove that ability is to
poison the default route that comes down from DHCP. Just setup a static
default route that points to the null0 interface and it will be unusable.
Another way you will see it used (especially in the lab) is in route
summarization. Null0 allows you to poison the summary route while allowing
the individual routes to retain the correct gateway.
Whatever way you use it, it's just a way to keep a route in the route table
but make it unusable.
HTH,
Rik
