Greetings Frog,
The ASN's are mobility nodes which fall under the 802.16e air interface specification. The ASN gateways are key components of a WiMAX network. They usually connect to multiple WiMAX base stations to facilitate availability of services such as AAA, DHCP, and HA's (Home Agents, as in Mobile IP). They are currently available from a few vendors, each with their own (proprietary?) components, languages, tools, etc... Some use different ASIC's, FPGA's, and so on to facilitate high-speed packet processing, forwarding, and communication. They usually need to interface with other vendors and support new and interesting interface types such as R3, R4, R6... Could be the kind of thing that confuses one during rack-time :)
Though I am aware of products from a few vendors I have none in production just yet, lab R&D only, so I cannot offer any detailed vendor comparisons.
More info @
www3.ietf.org/proceedings/05nov/slides/16ng-4.pdf
A few vendors have good white-papers on this also.
Use the interface types when searching to narrow your search results.
HTH,

Thanks.
