MST works with RSTP. But the good news is that MST can integrate with
802.1D legacy areas. Here are some quotes and links for you....

"When you enable MST by using the spanning-tree mode mst global
configuration command, RSTP is automatically enabled."

I know we did transparent bridging
and the "bridge protocol ieee" worked with PVST in a small scale.
