RIP Timers

Folks,

Trying to understand a solution that has to do with RIP timers.

Issue: you have two paths between a set of routers. One is a direct path (Path A) and the other is a path through another router (Path B)

due to lower hop count, the working path is Path A. Now task says to configure the routers in such a way that should Path A fails, Path B is operational in 5 seconds.

  solution is timers 1 3 0 3

when the primary path fails, after the invalid timer, both set the metric of the route to 16. This would be three seconds per conifg. What if i change the invalid timer to 5 ..would that be wrong, or 4 for that matter. From what i understand reading the timer section the sum of invalid timer and hold timer should be within 5. Hold timer being the point where it considers out routes to destination.

also, i see recommendation to set the invalid timer 3x the update interval. however, in its default, its 6x.

  Thanks.

  Raj
