I would estimate, it's more than once per year but less than twice a year.
Typically, you'll have at least months advance notice of any changes being
planned.

The lab equipment doesn't change as often as the features being tested
change. For example, cisco might announce that of XXX date, features
supported by version 12.x of IOS will be included.

  How often does Cisco changes the format for the lab exam? I was going
through the archives and found out that the lab exam was changed around
December 06 timeframe with 4 switch topology as compared to 2 switch
topology.
