MSDP and MBGP

Hello Group Study. Is there any kind of rule regarding when multiprotocol BGP
is needed when running MSDP. So far my only experience with MSDP was when
configuring Anycast RP in a and it worked great in a regular IGMP domain, even
with more than two RPs and done in a mesh group. As was reading more
documentation on it, I was seeing more and more hints that MBGP is always
required, and was becoming more and more confused. So far, it seems like,
when using default peer, is the only time when MBGP is not required. So my
question is, when would MBGP be required with MSDP? Under normal conditions
even between multiple ASs, if the unicast paths are congruent to multicast
RPF, I would think MSDP can work standalone without having to do anything
else. Does it sound right? And under which scenarios would I ever need to do
address an address family for ipv4 multicast in BGP during my lab?

Thank you!
