I don't believe you can as it would change the structure of programming
logic there... Either an interface is "physical" where the config is all in
one place, or it's a trunk in which case subinterfaces are used for the
config. Even if you have a native vlan or use vlan 1, you'll still have a
.1 subinterface.

Mind you, I haven't tried to set this up on mine, but playing with a PIX515
and 7.2 code the other day, it made me get rid of the IP address on the
physical interface config once I did a subinterface.

How can i configure a physical interface on ASA to tag incoming and out
going packets with a particular VLAN-ID. I know that this can done on the
subinterfaces, but i want to assign the physical interface to a VLAN.
I think that was possible with PIX 6.x code.
Correct me if i am wrong.
