There used to be a time when the CCIE team didn't really give much
information regarding the lab...(I could be wrong - but I don't remember a
lot of info being publicly available or announced back in 1998). I know
when I took my lab exam in 2000, there was a nice little token ring switch
on the exam that I had never seen before nor knew was going to be on the
exam. Anyone else remember the good 'ole 3920s? What a lovely surprise!
Thank you for taking the CCIE Lab exam...and "say hello to my little
friend." (say it like Al Pacino and it sounds much cooler) Needless to
say, I hacked my way through it, and figured it out (and got four digits to
prove it). The CCIE lab has changed significantly since back then and I
think it reflects real-world situations even less now, then it did back then
which is making it more difficult to apply ones experience to the CCIE lab.
Four switches vs. two switches etc, shouldn't really impact the prepared
student that badly. However, spending time configuring an additional two
devices - including troubleshooting these devices, could impact the amount
of "extra time" the candidate has when they have finished. I say bring back
ATM, bring back ISDN and IS-IS, bring back the Catalyst 5500, bring back the
3920, bring back Appletalk, IPX, Decnet, bring back the troubleshooting part
of checking to make sure the cables are pushed in all the way (heck, doesnt
this fix most production problems anyhow?). Add a catalyst 6500 for the
core and a cat 4500 at the distribution layer. Interconnect candidates
racks so they have to work together to figure out the over-all picture..now
we're talking!!!
thanks,
Brad Ellis
