Subject: RE: book question

Hi Sonia,

Currently, our book has not been updated for a 3rd edition. We are supplying
the roadmap information that you are seeking in electronic format at our
web-site at www.netmasterclass.net.

At the NMC web-site, the roadmap appears in at least two places:

(1) there is a self-assessment roadmap that provides a similar structure to
the book

(2) there is a technical-library that also provides a similar structure to
the book.

The benefit over both of these is that they are updated frequently.

We are considering publishing an updated edition of the book; however, we
are busy developing other products such as - CCIE level assessment tools,
robust educational web-portals and a video-on-demand series. With these
other projects in development, it has been difficult to work on a 3rd
Edition to our book. Perhaps sometime in the future.

Since 1998, what people have liked about the book is the structure and
methodology applied in the book.

Regarding the book's structure, the book has a six-level roadmap. Currently
we have modified this six-level roadmap to a three-level roadmap with a
number of sub-levels within them. You can check this general structure out
at the following link (This shows the general structure of the NMC technical
library):

http://www.netmasterclass.com/site/lib.php

You can also access this structure by logging into ouw web-portal with the
username/password: demo/demo. Once you log in, click on the "My Roadmap"
tab, and you can access an interactive "self-assessment" roadmap. Let me
know if you have any issues accessing this self-assessment roadmap.

If you'd like, I would be more than glad to share more details about the
current NMC R&S CCIE Preparation "roadmap" with you. Also, consider other
preparation strategies from as many sources and vendors as possible.

The purpose of the "roadmap" approach" is to modularize your CCIE
preparation effort. As Paul Borghese mentioned in one of his very first
GroupStudy posts in 1998, "studying for the CCIE is like eating an elephant
- where do you start?" The "roadmap" approach" helps you determine where to
start and what order to study topics. The roadmap approach can also supply
stopping points to consolidate and review what you have learned.

The second aspect of the book that has been popular over the years has been
the methodology applied in the book - "the know your options, make no
assumptions, spot the issues" methodology. At the end of each chapter in the
book is a "spot the issues" exercise that tests you on whether you know all
of your configuration and verification options. If you want to discuss this
methodology more, please let me know. We can certainly do that. Once again,
please consider methodologies from many different sources.

Also, this methodology is applied throughout our 25 Scenario DoiT workbook.
You can check this out at: http://www.netmasterclass.com/site/doit.php

Currently, we are trying to take all of our content and methods and present
them in a series of Video-on-Demand modules. We have released our first set
on Frame-Relay. It features Mr. Bob Sinclair, a great instructor and
presenter. You can check out Bob's "configure and verify/verify and
configure" methodology in this series. Anything Bob does is excellent!

Currently, we are currently working on an IPv6 video-on-demand series with
Anthony Sequiera. Anthony is doing a great job with this series. What is
very exciting about this IPv6 series is this: Anthony is working with
various content developers to produce the final VoD content. (Anthony is
also generating a lot of content himself! Great job Anthony!) By having
Anthony handling the final VoD content, this allows some very prestigous
subject matter experts get involved with the content development of these
VoD's. For example, we are trying to get Radia Perlman involved in our
Spanning Tree video-on-demand series - the only problem is, she is not
returning our phone calls or e-mails! : ) (I am only kidding here!)

However, if anyone wants to get involved in developing video on demand
content or on-line quiz content, please let us know. At NMC, we have a team,
established publishing processes and an infrastructure to help get you
published on-line. And don't worry if you feel uncomfortable recording your
own voice. We have Anthony "the machine" Sequiera that is awesome at
recording content! : )

At NMC, we are very excited about promoting an "open architecture" of
e-learning products and resources. With such an architecture, students will
not have to pay high prices for a single "end-to-end" solution from one
company. Students will be able to select the "best of breed" modules from a
number of companies, or even individual instructors. It is a very exciting
time in the education business!! Related to this, check out Yale Professor
David Gelernter's article in Forbes magazine last year. It was titled "Who
needs a college campus anyway." Here is a snippet of the beginning of the
article:

"A new free market in higher education will turn the academy on its head.

Software and the Internet can already deliver a course in chemistry or
Christianity, Shakespeare or videogame design to your home computer. Soon
someone will standardize the software and the structure of college-level
courses delivered electronically. When that happens, the world of online
teaching will blow wide open. The wide-ranging choices, the convenience and
the cost savings will make the difference. The result will be a true free
market in higher education that will turn the world of colleges and
universities upside down."

What Gelernter is saying about univerisities applies to technical training
as well, such as CCIE training. This is revolutionary end exciting stuff!!

This is all great news for students and content developers. It will usher in
an era of open architecture educational services where students will not
need to select all of their services from one school at a high expense.
Instead, they will be able to select individual modules from different
schools at a lower expense. This seems to be the future of education. At
NMC, we are trying to help usher in this future with our assessment based
educational web platform.

Sorry for the digression, but we are very excited about these emerging
developments of on-line education. This modular open architecture world will
be very good for students and content developers.

In closing, there is no 3rd Edition of our book right now. Please access our
web-site for the current NMC roadmap. Also, I will post a PDF about the
"know thy options, make no assumptions, spot the issues" methodology if
anyone has an interest in this subject. These are two of the key aspects
that have been very popular with the book since 1998. To obtain the most
current content in the context of this structure and methodology, go to
www.netmasterclass.net.

Also, in the spirit of the emerging open architecture environment of
education, read about CCIE preparation strategies from as many sources and
vendors as possible.

HTH,
